10 euro silver coin dedicated to GREEK CULTURE — Philosophers — Diogenes Born in Sinope on the Black Sea, Diogenes was the most significant of the cynic philosophers. In exile, he moved to Athens, where he became a pupil of Antisthenes, disciple of Socrates and founder of the Cynic school of thought. The cynics advocated simplicity, self-sufficiency, austerity, self-knowledge and moral probity. Τhey most probably derived their name from the word cyon (dog), by which Diogenes came to be known, in allusion to his biting sarcasm. In Athens he was said to live in a large ceramic jar and in full daylight would stroll about holding a lantern, claiming to be searching for a (true or honest) man. Diogenes eventually settled in Corinth, where Alexander the Great once sought to meet him. When Alexander inquired whether there was any favour that Diogenes might want of him, Diogenes famously retorted “Yes, stand out of my sunlight”, in keeping with his typical disdain for social conventions and material possessions. 10 euro silver coin dedicated to GREEK CULTURE — lyric poets — Sappho Sappho of Lesbos was one of the greatest lyric poets in ancient Greece and one of the first in the Western world to consistently express personal emotions. She composed her poems in the Aeolian dialect and sang them to the accompaniment of a lyre. Her works, which survive mostly in fragments, cover a broad thematic range: poems celebrating nature and love, hymeneals and epithalamia (marriage songs), odes and invocations of gods. Her superb lyric imagery, vivid rendering of female sensitivity and bold eroticism have, for centuries, stirred widespread interest, if not controversy. Sappho won high acclaim in ancient times and was even hailed as the “tenth Muse”. To this day, she remains one of the most influential ancient poets. 6 euro mini silver coin dedicated to INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF SUSTAINABLE TOURISM FOR DEVELOPMENT By decision of the United Nations, 2017 has been proclaimed “International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development” in recognition of the important role of sustainable tourism as a positive instrument towards the eradication of poverty, the protection of the environment and the improvement of quality of life, and of its contribution to the three dimensions of sustainable development (economic, social and environmental). Tourism has close linkages to other sectors and can contribute to decent job creation. The sector’s importance is reflected by the fact that tourism is included as targets under three of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the United Nations. International tourism, in particular, can generate trade opportunities, foster better understanding among peoples and bring about a greater appreciation of the rich heritage and the inherent values of different cultures, thereby contributing to the strengthening of peace in the world. Blister with 5 euro collector coin commemorating 175 years from the birth of NIKOLAOS GYSIS NIKOLAOS GYSIS (1842-1901) Nikolaos Gysis, one of the finest modern Greek painters, was born on the island of Tinos but grew up in Athens, where he attended classes at the Athens School of Fine Arts. In 1865, he received a scholarship to study at the renowned Munich Academy of Fine Arts, where he mastered a flawless technique and the tenets of academic realism. He spent most of his life in Munich, where he became full professor at the Academy, returning to Greece only occasionally. His journey to Asia Minor with fellow artist Nikephoros Lytras enriched his palette and shifted his focus to Greek genre themes. The output of his later years became more poetic and idealistic, often inspired by Greek mythology and religious themes, with a discernible influence of symbolism. ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE OF PHILIPPI The ancient city of Philippi was named after Philip II of Macedon, father of Alexander the Great. The site, which includes an ancient theatre, three Christian basilicas and other monuments, was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2016. 2 euro commemorative circulation coin DEDICATED TO ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE OF PHILIPPI 2 euro commemorative circulation coin dedicated to 60 YEARS IN MEMORIAM OF NIKOS KAZANTZAKIS NIKOS KAZANTZAKIS (1883-1957) Nikos Kazantzakis (1883-1957) was one of Greece’s greatest 20th-century writers. He is known across the world mostly for his novels, rich in metaphysical insight and iconic heroes, and translated into over 30 languages. 200 gold coin dedicated to greek culture — philosophers — DIOGENES 100 euro MINI GOLD PLUS coin dedicated to GREEK MYTHOLOGY — THE OLYMPIAN GODS — ATHENA ATHENA Athena, favourite daughter of Zeus, was the goddess of wisdom, war and the crafts. She sprang forth from Zeus’s head, fully grown and fully armed, representing his wisdom and will. In ancient Greek art, she is portrayed wearing a helmet, often holding shield and spear. Worshipped throughout the Greek world, Athena was especially associated with Athens, of which she was the patroness. It was to Athena Parthenos (Athena the virgin) that the Parthenon was dedicated, with its chryselephantine (gold and ivory) statue of the goddess, crafted by Phidias, while the colossal Athena Promachos (Athena the front-line fighter), also by Phidias, watched over the city from the rock of the Acropolis. Her numerous epithets include: Pallas, Polias (of the city), Archegetis (leader), Nike (victory). The olive was her sacred tree, and the owl, represented on the Athenian drachma coins, was her symbol. 50 euro MINI GOLD coin dedicated to CULTURAL HERITAGE — MINOAN CIVILISATION MINOAN CIVILISATION The Minoan civilisation emerged on the island of Crete in the early 3rd millennium BC and reached its apogee in the 16th and 15th centuries BC. Named after Minos, the mythical king of Knossos, it was the most brilliant civilisation to evolve in the Bronze Age Aegean. The monumental palace of Knossos uncovered by Sir Arthur Evans at the turn of the 20th century and three other important palaces later unearthed at Phaestos, Malia and Zakros indicate a well-organised and affluent society strongly engaged in maritime trade throughout the Eastern Mediterranean. The sophistication of the Minoan culture is further evidenced by the development of scripts (first, Cretan hieroglyphic, then Linear A, both still undeciphered) and exquisite art (architecture, murals, pottery, figurines). The Minoan civilisation collapsed, for reasons that are still debated, in the 15th century BC, when Crete was taken over by the Mycenaeans. 10 euro silver coin , EUROPA STAR 2017 SERIES dedicated to THE AGE OF IRON AND GLASS THE AGE OF IRON AND GLASS The Age of Iron and Glass in Greece coincides with the first decades of state-building after Greece’s independence in 1830. An iconic literary figure of the time was Greece’s national poet, Dionysios Solomos (1798-1857), whose work immortalised the Greek nation’s struggle for liberty. The late 19th century was marked by the first major engineering projects in Greece, including, most prominently, the opening of the Corinth Canal, inaugurated in 1893, and the construction of the iron bridge spanning it and connecting the Peloponnese with the Greek mainland, both remarkable feats of engineering in their day. Another landmark event was the revival of the Olympic Games and the holding of the first modern Olympics in Athens in 1896, symbolised by the Bréal cup awarded to the Greek Spyros Louis, winner of the marathon race.  Numismatic Programme 2017  Hellenic Numismatic Programme of 2017   COMMEMORATIVE CIRCULATION COINS 2 EURO Commemorative circulation coin dedicated to: “ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE OF PHILIPPI” 2 euro Commemorative circulation coin dedicated to: “60 YEARS IN MEMORIAM OF NIKOS KAZANTZAKIS”   COLLECTOR COINS 200 euro  GOLD COIN DEDICATED TO: “GREEK CULTURE – PHILOSOPHERS – DIOGENES”   100 euro  MINI GOLD PLUS COIN DEDICATED TO: “GREEK MYTHOLOGY – THE OLYMPIAN GODS – ATHENA”  50 euro  MINI GOLD COIN DEDICATED TO: “CULTURAL HERITAGE – MINOAN CIVILISATION”  10 euro SILVER COIN DEDICATED TO: “GREEK CULTURE – PHILOSOPHERS – DIOGENES”  10 euro  SILVER COIN DEDICATED TO: “GREEK CULTURE – LYRIC POETS – SAPPHO”  6 euro MINI SILVER COIN DEDICATED TO: “INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF SUSTAINABLE TOURISM FOR DEVELOPMENT”    SPECIAL EDITIONS  Coin card – blister with the 2 euro  commemorative circulation coin dedicated to: “ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE OF PHILIPPI”     Coin card – blister with the 2 euro  Commemorative circulation coin dedicated to: “60 YEARS IN MEMORIAM OF NIKOS KAZANTZAKIS”     Blister with  5 euro  collector coin commemorating “175 YEARS FROM THE BIRTH OF NIKOLAOS GYSIS”     Blister set dedicated to: “GREEK TOURISM – CRETE” containing all eight denominations of 2017 greek euro coins  2 euro  Commemorative circulation coin (PROOF) dedicated to: “ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE OF PHILIPPI”  2 euro  Commemorative circulation coin (PROOF) dedicated to: “60 YEARS IN MEMORIAM OF NIKOS KAZANTZAKIS”    PROOF Coin Set containing all eight denominations of 2017 greek euro coins in a wooden box.
