Luxemburg - 5 Euro silver proof, Congress of Vienna, 2015
Austria celebrates in 2015 the 200th Anniversary of the Congress of Vienna. Two hundred years ago the world's most powerful leaders gathered at the Congress of Vienna to restore the European order after 25 years of upheaval created by the French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars. The Emperor of Austria, the Tsar and Tsarina of Russia as well as the kings of Prussia, Denmark, Bavaria and Wurttemberg were the most prominent representatives at the Congress of Vienna, which took place from 18 September 1814 to 9 June 1815. Under the direction of the Austrian Foreign Minister, Prince von Metternich, representatives from around 200 European states deliberated primarily in the former foreign ministry building on Ballhausplatz (today’s Federal Chancellery). Their goal was to reorganize the political map following Napoleon’s defeat. Numerous borders were redefined and new states created.
