The fete de la federation was celebrated on the Champs de Mars on the 14th of July 1790. A way to celebrate the storming of the Bastille's first anniversary. After 1789 regional federations of National Guards were created in the provinces. Paris Commune decided to organise with the encouragement of La Fayette a great national Federation party gathering all the local federations' representatives. A great mass was celebrated on an esplanade outfitted for the occasion. After that, the King swore he would maintain the Constitution that had been decided by the National Assembly. The aspiration to a national union triumphed and the ceremony became a great popular party.
