One side of the coin shows a three-quarter portrait of Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) and his telescope. The background shows his drawing of the surface of the moon. In the silver ring the design is continued with Newton's telescope, the observatory in Kremsmunster, a modern telescope, a radio telescope and a space telescope. The other side shows the dark side of the moon and a satellite investigating it. The silver ring shows a partially covered planet earth and a stilised sun shining.
