The coin is the last in a series of five coins that celebrate many fundamental constitutional stages for the country. On 13rd December 1974 Malta was proclaimed republic following the constitutional amendments agreed by a large majority in parliament. The design reproduces the marble plaque unveiled on the facade of the Presidential Palace in Valletta to commemorate Malta's passage from monarchy to republic.
