Notre-Dame de Paris. The Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris, commonly known as Notre-Dame, is one of the most iconic monuments of the city of Paris and of France. Located on the Ile de la Cite, it is a Catholic place of worship and serves as the seat of the Archdiocese of Paris, dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Its construction began in 1163 at the initiative of Bishop Maurice de Sully and spanned nearly two centuries, being completed in the mid-14th century. The devastating fire of April 15, 2019 destroyed the spire and the entire roof covering the nave, the choir, and the transept. This was the most serious disaster the cathedral had suffered since its construction. Rebuilt identically, the cathedral was reopened to the public on December 8, 2024. The twelve stars of the European Union are represented in the outer ring of the coin.
