Erected in the 12th century at the instigation of Bishop Maurice de Sully, Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral is a jewel of Gothic architecture that has dominated the Ile de la Cite for over eight centuries. This architectural masterpiece, characterized by its slender buttresses and flamboyant rose windows, bears witness to the skills of medieval builders and has been the scene of many major historical events, such as the coronation of Napoleon Bonaparte. Today, it remains a place of religious and intellectual pilgrimage, attracting millions of visitors from all over the world, making it the most visited monument in France and Europe. This year, Monnaie de Paris is honoring the reopening of Notre-Dame de Paris to the public by minting a commemorative 10 euro coin, engraving for all eternity the lines of this jewel of Gothic art. The obverse of this coin features a full-scale depiction of the cathedral's west facade, with its rose window emerging between the two towers. The official Notre-Dame de Paris logo also appears against the listel.
