Commemorative coin 2 Euro to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Portuguese Republic. In 1910, a revolution deposed the Portuguese monarchy and its last King, Manuel II. In 1910 a new regime began in Portugal. The last years of the monarchy were troubled. The economic situation was dramatic, the political elites were unprepared. On the other hand the republic party continued to progress. The general elections on August 1910 showed republican majorities in Lisbon and Oporto and on October, the murder by a madman of one of the republican main leaders the distinguished physician Miguel Bombarda, offered the pretext for a rising that was already organized. The republic was proclaimed in the city hall building, which we can see here in a modern picture. On the reverse the coin depicts the symbols of the Portuguese Republic.
