Georg Henrik von Wright (1916–2003) is remembered as a liberal and diverse philosopher and scholar of society. In addition to holding a chair at the University of Helsinki, he succeeded Ludwig Wittgenstein as professor at the University of Cambridge. Von Wright's ground-breaking studies in logic, the philosophy of science and the philosophy of action put Finnish philosophy in the international spotlight. Considered the most influential Finnish philosopher of the 20th century, von Wright also expressed his opinions on many phenomena of his times and was a familiar figure on television, in the press and on marches for peace. The year 2016 marks the centennial of von Wright's birth, and Finland pays tribute to this great thinker with a commemorative coin.
