After the First World War, Belgium and Luxembourg established the Belgium-Luxembourg Economic Union (BLEU) as a customs union, one of the most important measures being the linking of the Belgian and Luxembourg franc. The exchange rates of the two currencies were the same from the end of World War II until they were replaced by the euro in 2002.
